Pivotal Contracting LLC is owned and operated by Joe Mackey. The company is based in Hamilton, MT and serves Ravalli County and the Bitterroot Valley, including parts of southern Missoula County.
Joe grew up in the Greater Pocono Region of Pennsylvania and is a second-generation building contractor. His parents ran a home-building business for decades and he grew up fully immersed in the industry. He was literally on his first roof at age 1 and physically worked on an addition to the family house at age 11. No lie! “If Dad was working, you were expected to help with everything. You didn’t want to cut any corners or have to answer to Dad if the job wasn’t done right,” recalls Joe.
Joe earned a good reputation constructing various projects in Summit County, Colorado from 2014 until he relocated to Montana in 2022. He plans to plant deep roots among the like-minded, hard-working friends and local residents. Pivotal Contracting LLC has a lot of practical and professional services to offer the Bitterroot Valley; especially at a time when there seems to be such a shortage of skilled tradesmen.
Early work
His first real job was on a pig farm in rural PA. He progressed to being a top-notch carpenter for one of the most sought-after framing crews and has framed more than 100 homes. Being very mechanically inclined and meticulous, construction related skills just came naturally to him, as evidenced by the quality of his work. As a teen, he also operated a full-scale lawn-care business and ran his own Snow-Board Instruction School with a partner until his dream of living in Breckenridge, Colorado became a reality.
Specialty
Joe has a passion for working with wood. He has done many specialty wood projects for numerous businesses on Main St. in Breckenridge. Selecting trees for their specific grains and characteristics of the wood species is a passion of his. He harvests fallen trees and works to saw, plane and join the pieces into a work of art. Some of these specialty projects have become log benches, cabinets, shelves, doors, trim, jewelry boxes, cutting boards, tables, headboards, stools and fences. There’s no end to his creativity and attention to detail.
In addition to his carpentry skills, Joe has a knack for operating heavy equipment with ease and precision. He has experience digging foundations, ditches, installing drainage systems, driveways, removing trees and stumps, creating landscapes and patios with boulders and pitched surfaces for beauty and function.
When he’s not working for his valued clients, Joe enjoys being outdoors, hiking, hunting, snowmobiling, biking and spending time with his dogs. He enjoys being out in nature and treasures the vast beauty of the Big Sky areas within Montana’s Bitterroot Valley. He takes great pride in being member of the community and gives back whenever possible.
